Din guide till Toulouse
Few French cities wear their identity as boldly as Toulouse. The warm terracotta brick that covers its facades, churches, and medieval hôtels particuliers has earned it the nickname La Ville Rose, the Pink City, and on a clear afternoon in Occitanie the whole place seems to glow. Sitting on the Garonne river roughly midway between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, Toulouse has always been a crossroads, and that position has shaped everything from its architecture to its appetite.
The city's historic core rewards unhurried exploration. The Capitole, the grand neoclassical town hall that anchors the main square, has been the seat of civic life here for centuries, and the square itself remains the natural gathering point for the city. A short walk south brings you to the Basilique Saint-Sernin, the largest Romanesque church in Europe still standing intact, a pilgrimage stop on the route to Santiago de Compostela that draws visitors for its architecture as much as its spiritual significance. The neighbourhood of Saint-Cyprien, across the Garonne, offers a slightly different pace, with independent shops and the Musée des Abattoirs, a contemporary art museum housed in a former slaughterhouse. Les Carmes and the streets around the Place Saint-Georges have their own character, dense with covered markets and the kind of food culture that Toulouse takes seriously.
