Few places along Egypt's Red Sea coast carry as much accumulated history as Quseir, a small port town that sits roughly halfway between Hurghada and Marsa Alam on the western shore of the Red Sea. Its Arabic name, Al-Quseir, means the small castle, and the Ottoman fortress that still stands near the waterfront gives the town a tangible anchor to centuries of trade, pilgrimage, and maritime ambition. Long before the resort strips of the northern Red Sea were imagined, Quseir was one of Egypt's most significant ports, used by ancient Egyptians to launch expeditions to the land of Punt, later by Roman traders moving spices and incense, and eventually by pilgrims crossing to the Hijaz on their way to Mecca. That layered past is not merely decorative; it shapes the texture of the town itself, from the coral-block architecture of the old quarter to the quiet, unhurried pace that distinguishes Quseir from the larger tourist centres further north.
The town is compact enough to explore on foot, and the old medina repays slow wandering. Coral stone buildings, some still inhabited, line narrow lanes that open unexpectedly onto the sea. The Ottoman fort, built in the sixteenth century and later used by Napoleon's forces during the French campaign in Egypt, has been restored and functions as a small museum covering the town's trading and pilgrimage history. The waterfront promenade offers a straightforward view of the Red Sea that feels genuinely local rather than staged for visitors, with fishing boats moored alongside the occasional dive vessel.
