Its Arabic name, Al-Quseir, means the small castle, and the Ottoman fortress that still stands near the waterfront gives the town a tangible anchor to centuries of trade, pilgrimage, and maritime ambition. Long before the resort strips of the northern Red Sea were imagined, Quseir was one of Egypt's most significant ports, used by ancient Egyptians to launch expeditions to the land of Punt, later by Roman traders moving spices and incense, and eventually by pilgrims crossing to the Hijaz on their way to Mecca.
