Pattaya sits on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Thailand, roughly two hours south of Bangkok along the Eastern Seaboard, and it has spent decades confounding the expectations of people who think they already know what it is. The city that earned a particular reputation in the 1970s and 1980s has long since grown into something considerably more layered: a resort destination of genuine scale, with a coastline that stretches from the central bay northward through Naklua and southward past Jomtien, a permanent population that has swelled with expats and regional migrants, and a leisure economy that now spans everything from family water parks to open-ocean skydiving.

The geography does a lot of the work in orienting a first visit. Pattaya Bay curves in a broad arc, and Walking Street at its southern end remains the axis around which the city's nightlife reputation still turns, though the area around Bali Hai Pier has become something of a staging point for a wider range of activities, including go-karting at EasyKart, which occupies a site right at the pier itself. North of the bay, Naklua is quieter and more residential, while Jomtien to the south draws a different crowd: longer-stay visitors, families, and those who prefer a beach with a little more breathing room. The hill of Pratumnak between the two main bays functions as a kind of elevated buffer, with views across both stretches of water.
