At the southern tip of Gran Canaria, Maspalomas occupies a stretch of coastline that feels genuinely unlike anywhere else in Spain. The dunes that define it, a protected nature reserve of shifting golden sand that rolls into the Atlantic, are not a beach in the conventional sense but a small desert, shaped by trade winds and recognised as a biosphere reserve. The town itself is a loose confederation of neighbourhoods rather than a compact urban centre.
