Tenerife sits at an unlikely crossroads: a volcanic island off the northwest coast of Africa that belongs politically to Spain, yet feels climatically and geographically like nowhere else in Europe. A shared yacht covering three hours on those waters gives a reasonable sense of the scale of cetacean activity in the strait between Tenerife and La Gomera, and the catalogue of ocean experiences available from the southern ports reflects just how central that marine life has become to the island's identity.
