Sinun oppaasi kohteeseen Teneriffa
Tenerife sits at an unlikely crossroads: a volcanic island off the northwest coast of Africa that belongs politically to Spain, yet feels climatically and geographically like nowhere else in Europe. The island's centrepiece, Mount Teide, rises to 3,715 metres and is the highest peak on Spanish territory, its rust-coloured flanks visible from almost every corner of the island on a clear day. That single geological fact shapes almost everything about Tenerife, from the microclimates that divide the lush north from the sun-baked south, to the reason the island draws visitors year-round rather than in a single seasonal rush.
The south, anchored by Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos, is where most first-time visitors land and linger. The resorts are unapologetically geared towards leisure, with long stretches of dark volcanic sand and a harbour culture built around the sea. From Los Cristianos, whale and dolphin watching excursions depart regularly into the Teno-Rasca marine corridor, one of the few places in the world where short-finned pilot whales reside permanently rather than passing through on migration. A shared yacht covering three hours on those waters gives a reasonable sense of the scale of cetacean activity in the strait between Tenerife and La Gomera, and the catalogue of ocean experiences available from the southern ports reflects just how central that marine life has become to the island's identity.
