Few places in Andalusia announce themselves quite as dramatically as Ardales, a small whitewashed town in the province of Málaga whose surrounding landscape reads like a geology lesson written in limestone. The town itself sits above the Guadalhorce river system, looking out over a reservoir-threaded valley that the locals call El Chorro, and the combination of water, rock, and altitude gives the area a character entirely unlike the coastal strip an hour to the south. Ardales has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as the painted caves of Cueva de Ardales attest, with ochre and charcoal markings left by people who recognised, long before the age of tourism, that this particular fold in the Málaga uplands was worth settling.

The town's medieval Moorish castle, the Castillo de Ardales, crowns the ridge above the old quarter and frames the kind of view that explains why Andalusia's hilltop settlements were positioned with such precision. Below it, the streets are narrow and shaded in the manner of towns that were designed around the logic of summer heat rather than the convenience of cars. There is a parish church, the Virgen de los Remedios, that incorporates stonework from the earlier mosque, a layering of history that recurs throughout this part of Spain with quiet regularity.
