Your guide to Anchorage
Few American cities announce themselves quite like Anchorage. Framed by the Chugach Mountains to the east and Cook Inlet to the west, Alaska's largest city sits at a latitude that gives summer days an almost surreal length and winter nights a deep, crystalline stillness. It is a place shaped by extremes, and that quality runs through everything here, from the scale of the surrounding wilderness to the pragmatic, self-reliant character of the people who have made it home.
Anchorage accounts for roughly forty per cent of Alaska's entire population, which makes it the undisputed commercial and cultural hub of the state, yet it wears that status lightly. Downtown is compact and walkable, anchored by the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts and the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center, the latter offering one of the most thorough accounts of Arctic and sub-Arctic history and indigenous culture anywhere in the country. The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail runs eleven miles along the inlet shoreline and is used by cyclists, joggers, and, in winter, cross-country skiers, offering views across to the volcanic peaks of the Alaska Range on clear days. Midtown and Spenard carry a more local, lived-in energy, with independent restaurants and neighbourhood bars that reflect the city's genuinely diverse population.
