Few French port cities carry quite the same layered identity as Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. Sitting at the very tip of the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy, it faces the English Channel with a directness that has shaped its entire history, from the vast military harbour Napoleon ordered built to the transatlantic liner traffic that once made it a gateway between Europe and the Americas. The city is not a polished tourist showpiece, and that is precisely what gives it its character. Housed in the former Gare Maritime Transatlantique, a monumental Art Deco building that once received passengers from the great ocean liners, including those transferred from the Titanic on its ill-fated maiden voyage, the museum is one of the most substantial maritime attractions in France. An entry ticket gives access to a remarkable collection that spans deep-sea exploration, submarine technology, and the social history of transatlantic travel. The decommissioned nuclear submarine Le Redoutable, the longest submarine open to the public in the world, is moored alongside and forms the centrepiece of the experience. It is the kind of place that rewards several hours rather than a quick pass-through.
