關於此場地

The Jerónimos Monastery in Belém stands as one of the finest surviving examples of Manueline architecture, the ornate Portuguese late-Gothic style that flourished during the Age of Discovery. Commissioned by King Manuel I in the early sixteenth century and built largely from the profits of the spice trade with India, the monastery served as a royal pantheon and a place of prayer for sailors departing on voyages of exploration. The tombs of Vasco da Gama and the poet Luís de Camões rest within its church, making it a site of profound national significance. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside the nearby Tower of Belém, the building's elaborately carved cloisters and south portal are considered masterworks of Portuguese stone craftsmanship.

Today, visitors can explore the monastery as part of a guided walking tour of the Belém district, which pairs entry to the building with a broader introduction to this historically rich riverside neighbourhood. The experience offers context for the monastery's role in shaping Portuguese identity and its enduring place in Lisbon's cultural landscape.
