But Kota Kinabalu functions less as a destination in itself and more as a staging point, a place to orient before heading toward the mountains, the rainforest lodges of the interior, or the dive towns of the east coast. Semporna, on the southeastern tip of the state, is the departure point for Mabul, Kapalai, and the celebrated Sipadan Island, and the transfer connections from Tawau Airport into Semporna are a practical first consideration for anyone planning that route.
