Few Spanish cities wear their history as visibly as Alicante. The port is genuinely central to daily life rather than merely scenic, with ferries connecting the mainland to the Balearic Islands and a marina that fills with leisure craft through the long warm months. The Explanada itself, paved in an undulating mosaic of marble in terracotta, cream, and grey, is one of the most recognisable promenades in the country and functions as the city's main social artery from early evening well into the night.
