Your guide to San Francisco
Few American cities carry as much mythology as San Francisco. Perched on a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, it is a city shaped as much by its geography as by the successive waves of people who arrived seeking gold, freedom, or reinvention. The hills are not incidental to the experience here; they divide neighbourhoods into distinct worlds, frame sudden views of the bay, and give the city a physical drama that flat-grid American cities simply cannot replicate. The fog that rolls in through the Golden Gate each afternoon in summer is as much a part of the atmosphere as the cable cars that still haul passengers up Nob Hill.
The waterfront has always been central to how the city understands itself. The Embarcadero stretches from the Ferry Building south toward AT&T Park, and from its piers the bay opens out toward Marin County, the East Bay hills, and the island that once housed the federal penitentiary at Alcatraz. A sunset cruise on the bay gives that geography a different register entirely, the city's skyline receding behind you as the light turns the water copper and the bridge towers disappear into low cloud. The Escape from The Rock Cruise approaches Alcatraz from the water, framing the island the way arriving prisoners once saw it, which is a more unsettling perspective than the standard cell-block tour alone provides.
