Your guide to San Antonio
San Antonio sits in south-central Texas where the Edwards Plateau meets the Gulf Coastal Plains, and the city's character is shaped as much by its layered history as by the slow curve of the San Antonio River threading through its centre. Founded in 1718 as a Spanish colonial outpost, it grew into one of the most historically significant cities in North America, and that weight of the past is still legible in the stone facades of the missions, the layout of the old plazas, and the name of nearly every major street downtown. Few American cities carry quite this density of living history within walking distance of a modern skyline.
The River Walk, known locally as the Paseo del Rio, is the axis around which most first visits organise themselves. Lined with cypress trees and descending a level below street traffic, it connects the convention district to the King William neighbourhood, one of the finest concentrations of Victorian architecture in Texas. A narrated river cruise along this stretch is one of the more quietly instructive ways to get oriented, covering the geography and the stories behind the bridges and buildings without requiring a single step on foot. Further north, the Pearl district occupies a converted brewery complex and has become the city's most talked-about neighbourhood for food and weekend markets, drawing a crowd that is distinctly local rather than tourist-facing.
