Few cities in Europe carry the weight of history as visibly as Granada. Perched at the foot of the Sierra Nevada in southern Andalusia, it was the last stronghold of Moorish rule on the Iberian Peninsula, surrendering to the Catholic Monarchs in 1492 after nearly eight centuries of Islamic civilisation. That layered past is not merely a footnote; it is the city's architecture, its street plan, its food, and its daily rhythm. Higher still, Sacromonte has its own distinct identity, shaped by the cave dwellings carved into the hillside and a long association with flamenco performance. An evening walking tour through Albaicín and Sacromonte at sunset is one of the more atmospheric ways to understand how these two neighbourhoods function as a counterpoint to the monumental grandeur across the valley.
