Jerónimos Monastery

The Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, Lisbon, stands as one of the finest examples of Manueline architecture in the world. Commissioned by King Manuel I and completed over the course of the sixteenth century, it was built to celebrate Vasco da Gama's successful sea voyage to India and to serve as a royal pantheon. The church holds the tombs of da Gama himself and the poet Luís de Camões, making it a site of profound national significance. UNESCO recognised the monastery as a World Heritage Site in 1983, alongside the nearby Tower of Belém.

The double-storey cloister, with its twisted columns and maritime motifs, is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished works of decorative stone carving in Portuguese history.
