The trade that followed transformed the town's economy and left behind a string of historic wine cellars, known locally as cantine, several of which still operate along the waterfront. Then in May 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi landed here with his Thousand volunteers, beginning the campaign that would unify Italy. A small museum near the port commemorates the landing, and the event is woven into the civic identity of the place in a way that feels genuine rather than performed.
