The botanical garden nearby, one of the world's most northerly, is a quiet surprise: it has been cultivating plants since 1912 and manages to coax roses and hundreds of other species through the short growing season. The old harbour area, once the commercial engine of the north, has shifted gradually toward leisure and tourism without losing its working character entirely.
