Din guide til Stockholm
Few European capitals announce themselves quite like Stockholm. Built across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea, the city is threaded together by water at every turn, and that geography shapes almost everything about how it feels to move through it. Bridges connect neighbourhoods that each carry their own distinct character, and the light, which shifts dramatically between the long pale evenings of summer and the brief, crystalline days of winter, gives the city a quality that photographers and painters have been drawn to for centuries.
Gamla Stan, the old town, occupies its own island and preserves a medieval street plan largely intact, its narrow lanes and ochre-washed facades sitting within easy walking distance of the Royal Palace and the Storkyrkan cathedral. Across the water, Södermalm rises steeply from the shoreline and has long been the city's creative quarter, full of independent studios, second-hand bookshops, and the kind of cafes where a fika, the Swedish ritual of coffee and something sweet, can stretch into an afternoon without anyone minding. Östermalm, by contrast, carries a more formal elegance, its wide boulevards and covered market hall reflecting the prosperity of the late nineteenth century. These are not interchangeable districts; each one rewards a different pace and a different kind of attention.
