Din guide til Padova
Few Italian cities carry as much intellectual and artistic weight as Padua, yet it sits quietly in the Veneto plain, overshadowed in the popular imagination by Venice, which lies only about forty kilometres to the east. That proximity has long defined Padua's character: close enough to the lagoon city to share its trading wealth and Renaissance ambition, far enough removed to develop its own distinct identity, one rooted in scholarship, devotion, and civic pride rather than spectacle.
The University of Padua, founded in 1222, is among the oldest in the world and shaped the city's fabric in ways that remain visible today. Galileo taught here. The anatomical theatre inside the Palazzo del Bo, built in 1594, is the oldest surviving structure of its kind anywhere, a steeply tiered oval where students once crowded to watch dissections by candlelight. That tradition of rigorous inquiry left Padua with a seriousness of purpose that distinguishes it from more obviously picturesque neighbours. The city's cafes and arcaded streets still fill with students, and the academic calendar gives the place a rhythm that feels genuinely lived-in rather than arranged for visitors.
