Zakopane sits at the foot of the Tatra Mountains in the far south of Poland, pressed against the Slovak border at an altitude that keeps the air noticeably sharper than anywhere else in Lesser Poland. From the upper station, the ridge drops away on both sides into Poland and Slovakia simultaneously, and on a clear day the scale of the range becomes genuinely arresting. The lake at Morskie Oko, reached by a longer approach through the Rybi Potok valley, is the other landmark that draws visitors regardless of season, its dark glacial water ringed by walls of rock that make it one of the most photographed places in the country.
