Few towns in England carry quite the weight of Windsor. Sitting on a chalk ridge above the Thames in Berkshire, roughly thirty miles west of central London, it has been a seat of royal power since William the Conqueror chose this bend in the river for a fortified stronghold in the eleventh century. That original motte-and-bailey grew, over successive reigns, into Windsor Castle, the largest occupied castle in the world and the oldest in continuous use. Entry tickets allow access to a complex that has hosted coronations, royal weddings, and nine centuries of English and British history within a single set of walls. The Long Walk, stretching nearly three miles through Windsor Great Park to the Copper Horse statue of George III, extends that sense of scale into the landscape itself.
