La tua guida a Valencia
Few Spanish cities carry their contradictions as gracefully as Valencia. It is a place where a medieval silk exchange stands a short walk from one of Europe's most audacious feats of contemporary architecture, where the smell of orange blossom drifts through streets that empty into a coastline the Romans once called their own. The third-largest city in Spain sits on the eastern seaboard of the Iberian Peninsula, facing the Mediterranean, and that orientation shapes almost everything about it: the quality of the light, the pace of daily life, and the food that has made it famous far beyond its own borders.
The old city is the natural starting point for anyone arriving for the first time. The Barrio del Carmen, with its layers of Roman, Moorish, and Gothic history pressed together in narrow lanes, gives way to the broader squares around the cathedral and La Lonja de la Seda, the fifteenth-century silk exchange that UNESCO recognised as a World Heritage Site. A short distance south, the Russafa neighbourhood operates at a different register entirely: a grid of early twentieth-century streets that has become the city's most talked-about quarter for independent cafes, weekend markets, and the kind of unhurried street life that resists easy categorisation. It is from this area that a Dutch-style city bike rental allows visitors to move between the old town, the Turia riverbed gardens, and the coast at a pace that suits the city's own rhythm far better than any organised coach circuit.
