Portsmouth sits on Portsea Island, making it one of the only British cities built almost entirely on an island, separated from the Hampshire mainland by a narrow tidal channel. The Mary Rose Museum alone justifies a full afternoon; the conservation work on display is extraordinary, and the dual-sided galleries allow visitors to look directly at the preserved timbers while the recovered artefacts are shown opposite. Few maritime museums anywhere in the world hold objects of comparable age and narrative weight.
