Charlotte Square, Heriot Row, and the broad sweep of George Street represent one of the most coherent examples of Georgian urban planning in Europe. The two halves of the city have different rhythms, different pubs, and a different relationship to the past, and understanding that contrast is probably the most useful thing a first-time visitor can do.
