Útikalauz Kotor-hoz
The old town of Kotor occupies a narrow triangle of land where the Škurda river meets the innermost reach of the Bay of Kotor, a drowned river canyon that the Adriatic has claimed as its own. Venetian walls climb almost vertically up the limestone face of Mount Lovćen behind the town, enclosing a medieval grid of churches, piazzas, and stone palaces that has earned the whole bay a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The fortifications are not merely decorative: Kotor spent centuries as a Venetian naval outpost, and the architecture of the old town reflects that long stewardship in its loggias, its carved wellheads, and the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, whose Romanesque facade has presided over the main square since the twelfth century.
The bay itself is the dominant geographical fact of any visit. It is often mistaken for a fjord, though its origins are different; what matters practically is that the water is calm, sheltered, and extraordinarily clear, and that the surrounding mountains create a microclimate that can feel almost theatrical in the way morning mist lifts off the surface. The islet of Our Lady of the Rock, near Perast, sits just offshore on an artificial island that local sailors built up over centuries by sinking old ships and dropping stones, and it remains one of the most quietly affecting sights in the eastern Adriatic. Several of the speedboat and boat tours departing from Kotor include a stop there alongside the Blue Cave, a sea cave on the Lustica peninsula whose turquoise interior light has made it the defining natural attraction of the bay.
