Few French towns announce themselves quite as dramatically as Le Puy-en-Velay. The ancient capital of the Haute-Loire department in the Auvergne region sits within a volcanic basin, and the skyline that greets arrivals is unlike almost anything else in the country: two extraordinary volcanic plugs rise abruptly from the valley floor, each crowned by a monument that has defined the town's identity for centuries. The Rocher Corneille carries an enormous nineteenth-century statue of the Virgin Mary, cast from cannons captured at Sebastopol, while the slender Rocher Saint-Michel supports a Romanesque chapel that dates to the tenth century and requires a climb of more than two hundred steps to reach. These are not decorative curiosities but the physical grammar of a place that has organised its spiritual and civic life around them for over a millennium.

The town's deeper fame rests on its role as one of the great starting points of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The Via Podiensis, which begins here and stretches roughly 1,500 kilometres to the Spanish border at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, is among the most historically significant walking routes in Europe. Pilgrims have been setting out from the Cathedral of Notre-Dame du Puy-en-Velay since at least the tenth century, and the cathedral itself, a UNESCO World Heritage site, remains the emotional and architectural centre of the old town. Its facade of polychrome stonework, its cloisters, and the Black Madonna venerated within draw visitors who have no intention of walking a single kilometre of the Camino alongside those who are about to walk all of it.
