Cuenca is one of those cities that rewards a slower pace. Perched dramatically above the gorges of the Huécar and Júcar rivers in the highlands of Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, it occupies a rocky promontory that has shaped its character as much as any human hand. Nearby, the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español occupies one of the hanging houses themselves, a pairing of medieval architecture and twentieth-century Spanish abstraction that is quietly remarkable. The collection was founded in 1966 by Fernando Zóbel and includes work by Antoni Tàpies, Eduardo Chillida, and Gustavo Torner, artists whose engagement with form and texture seems entirely at home in a building that is itself a feat of structural audacity.
